YMCA Peace Medal

Our International Program presents the YMCA Peace Medal annually during YMCA Peace Week to an individual, couple or group in our community to recognize the efforts and talents of ordinary Canadians who work behind the scenes locally and globally to promote the ideals of peace and make our world more fair and just.  In the nominations we are looking for people who:
•  Work without any special resources, status, wealth or position
•  Work without expecting recognition

•  Believe individual effort can make a difference
•  Have committed themselves to making our work fairer, more just and more peaceful
•  Selflessly make an effort to improve conditions for people in our community and beyond.
• Previous recipients have been:

1988 – Aengus Finnan and Erica Naish, Youth for Peace
1993 – Gary O'Dwyer and Nancy Dalgarno, educators
1994 – Evelyn Wittman, Former Volunteer and Executive Director, Horizons of Friendship
1995 – Lenie Rhenbergen, Scott Mission and overseas volunteer
1996 – Jacqueline & Ron Neun, community work on peace and global issues and work in Africa
1997 – Danielle Pierce, student working with homeless and disadvantaged           Dorothy Allen, volunteer work with many local community organizations
1998 – Roberta Fuller, educator
1999 – Paul & Anne Burnham, local farmers supporting local and international aid and development issues and organizations
2000 – Father Timothy Coughlan, co-founder of Horizons of Friendship, Cobourg-based  international development organization working in Central America and Mexico
2001 – Rod Baker, Coats for Kids Program and numerous community charitable efforts Gordon & Marion Sherwin, Sleeping Children Around the World and numerous community and global charitable efforts
2002 – Dr. Paul Caldwell and Dr. Bill Moebus for their service in Honduras and other countries providing free medical and dental care and for their local charitable work with countless agencies.
2003 – Doug Cunningham for his service to others in India, Burkino Faso, Belarus and locally through his involvement with Rotary International projects and Sleeping Children Around the World.

2004 - Adult Carroll and June Mallory for their community development work in Nicaragua and with our local community.

       Youth Patrick Clark for his commitment to social justice, and global learning
Nominations are accepted in September and October of each year and the medal is awarded in November. For nomination forms or more information, contact the Director, Development.
